Halogen-Free Flame Retardant Masterbatch: UL94V0 Solution for PC Films

2026-03-13 11:01:44

Driven by increasingly stringent global environmental regulations and the trend toward thinner walls, the market demand for halogen-free flame retardant micron-thick PC films continues to grow. The IEC 61249-2-21 standard defines halogen-free materials as those with chlorine and bromine content both below 900 ppm, establishing a technical benchmark for the industry. Meanwhile, the EU RoHS Directive and REACH regulations restricting PFOS/PFOA further push materials toward environmentally friendly solutions. Against this backdrop, halogen-free flame retardant PC films are rapidly expanding their applications in sectors such as new energy batteries, electronic products, building materials, and transportation, with UL94 V-0 flame retardant rating serving as the fundamental entry requirement for these fields.

To address the demand for thin-wall flame retardancy, EVERSUN has developed YIMA MPC-SF386, a halogen-free flame retardant masterbatch composed of polycarbonate and silicone resin. It achieves efficient flame retardancy through a condensed-phase mechanism, migrating to the surface during combustion to form a dense ceramic-like protective layer that insulates against heat and oxygen. Application data demonstrates that at 0.43mm thickness, adding 20-25% MPC-SF386 achieves UL94 V-0 rating; at 0.8mm thickness, 10-12% masterbatch combined with 0.4% anti-dripping agent likewise achieves V-0. The product is free from PFOS, PFOA, PFBS, and other prohibited substances, fully complying with RoHS, REACH, and IEC 61249-2-21 halogen-free standards.

Critically, MPC-SF386 has minimal impact on the mechanical properties of PC films. Impact strength testing across different addition levels shows a controlled fluctuation range of 728-834 J/M, with an overall retention rate above 90%—far superior to traditional flame retardant systems. From new energy batteries to transportation applications, halogen-free flame retardant micron-thick PC films are emerging as a key material supporting industrial upgrading, offering a combination of regulatory compliance, safety, and high performance
