Ethylene-maleic anhydride, 1:1 molar ratio
Maleic anhydride content: up to 70 wt%
Melting point: 200–250 °C
Functions: glass fiber surface treatment, curing agent, compatibilizer
Applications: surface treatment for electronic-grade glass fabric and Q-fabric
The key value of EMA in epoxy systems is not merely toughening like CTBN or core-shell rubber. Instead, its high density of maleic anhydride groups enables reactive interfacial modification, improved metal adhesion, co-curing, together with a moderate toughening effect.
EMA is a 1:1 alternating copolymer of ethylene and maleic anhydride, with Mw ≈ 60,000 and theoretical anhydride equivalent weight of ~126 g/eq. It has much higher functionality than conventional MAH-grafted polyolefins and is classified as a high-anhydride-density EMA copolymer.
For interfacial modification of metals, fillers and glass fibers, the performance ranking is: EMA > SMA >> POE-g-MAH > POE
